A knife is small enough to hold, and large enough to contain a world.
Ilian Dimitrov — Ilio — is a Bulgarian knifemaker whose folding knives bring precision mechanics into dialogue with gemstone, patterned steel and hand engraving.

Years of making. A continuing appetite for challenge.
Ilio lives and works in Bulgaria and has made knives for many years. His body of work moves from restrained, material-led folders to intensely engraved narrative pieces. What remains constant is an exacting fit between every element and a willingness to work with materials that resist easy solutions — especially gemstones used in the handle.

The whole before the flourish.
Material richness is never a substitute for proportion. Blade, mechanism, scale and engraving must first belong to the same form; only then can detail deepen the piece rather than decorate it.
“I like challenges. One of them is working with gemstones for the handle.”
From first proportion to final surface.
Each one-of-a-kind knife is developed as a complete composition, with construction and ornament advancing together.

Knife making in conversation with engraving.
Several of Ilio's most detailed works were created with Bulgarian engraver Tyanko Ivanov of TE Knives. Ilio makes the knife; Ivanov's hand engraving carries a chosen subject across its surfaces. The collaboration is credited on every relevant piece in the collection.
